It's because we could easily switch between using glucose for fuel from our last meal to using fat for fuel from our fat storage. This switching ability, called metabolic flexibility, is a prime measure of a healthy metabolism. ๐ฐ๐ฉ๐ So if you feel the urge to eat something sweet between meals, put it aside where you can't easily see it and enjoy it for dessert after your next meal instead. โกโ--------------โกโ--------------โกโ 8โฃ ๐ถ Move after eating ๐ถย ๐ Engage in physical activity like walking or light exercise 20 minutes after a meal to help manage glucose levels. In fact, simple walks 10-20 minutes after meals produce excellent results. ๐ชIf you can't go for a walk because you're stuck sitting at a desk at school or work, then calf raises can also help to bring your blood sugar down. Simply raise your feet onto your tiptoes and slowly bring them back down, you will start to feel this in your calf muscles after a few minutes.ย ๐A large 2018 research review found that in 135 people with type 2 diabetes, aerobic exercise, that is walking, after eating, decreased their glucose spikes by up to 27%. โกโ--------------โกโ--------------โกโ Eating with a fresh Perspectiveย So now that we've covered the practical tips, let's look at a couple of mindset shifts. 9โฃ โStop counting caloriesโ ๐ฉ๐ฝโโ๏ธJudging a food based on its calorie count is like judging a book by its page count. Instead, focus on the type of calories. ๐งSavory calories cause less damage than sweet ones, and larger, less frequent meals are often better than constant snacking. ๐Research shows that people on a glucose-flattening diet can lose more weight while eating more calories than people who eat fewer calories but spike their glucose levels. โกโ--------------โกโ--------------โกโ ๐ ๐ฏSugar is sugar๐ช Generally, we should minimize its intake since it spikes insulin and taxes the liver. ๐ซBut sweets are part of life, so enjoy sugar in moderation and not on an empty stomach. And since all sugars, regardless of their source, are eaten for pleasure, pick whichever one you like best and enjoy it guilt-free. Now, to slowly wean yourself off the taste of sugar so you can enjoy it in moderation, there are a few things you can do. โ Start by replacing that spoonful of sugar in your coffee with allulose. Allulose is a rare sugar that does not appear to raise blood sugar or insulin levels and early research suggests that allulose has anti-inflammatory properties and may help prevent obesity and reduce the risk of chronic disease. However, it is very expensive.ย ๐ชGlycine is another alternative to sugar, it is a sweet tasting amino acid. It won't spike your blood sugar and it helps build proteins needed for tissue and hormone maintenance. Glycine may help support heart and liver health, improve sleep, reduce diabetes risk and reduce muscle loss. It is also not expensive.ย ๐ญThen the next time you want candy, try eating an apple or other fruit. ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฌOr when a craving hits, notice it and take some deep breaths. โณIt usually passes after 20 minutes. ๐ง But if you're still in the throes of it, try eating something else. Usually, something with fat, like cheese, will do the trick. โDrinking naturally sweet teas, such as cinnamon or licorice, can also help. โกโ--------------โกโ--------------โกโ ๐พHere's the best part: these 10 hacks we've just discussed will work for you regardless of your age, diet, lifestyle, and whether you wear a continuous glucose monitor or not.
